Melexis MLX91219 High-Speed Hall Current Sensors
Melexis MLX91219 High-Speed Hall Current Sensors are high-accuracy, monolithic Hall-effect sensors that are sensitive to the flux density applied orthogonally to the IC surface. These sensors provide an analog output voltage proportional to the applied magnetic flux density. The MLX91219 components simplify module designs with a dual Over Current Detection (OCD) functionality, a flexible 3.3V/5V supply, and an improved SNR. With the hall technology, using a ferromagnetic core, currents can be measured in the ranges of 200A to beyond 2000A. The transfer characteristics of the MLX91219 are factory trimmed over-temperature and are programmable (offset, sensitivity, filtering, internal overcurrent threshold) during end-of-line customer calibration beyond the default factory trimming by Melexis. With the 400kHz bandwidth and fast response time, it is particularly well suited for high-speed applications such as inverters and converters characterized by their fast switching.
The MLX91219 Hall Current Sensors are packaged in two variants: VA and SOIC-8. The VA package is a thin through-hole package well suited for placement inside core airgaps, with several trim and form options available. In addition to the classic VDD/OUT/GND pins, an OCD pin is offered which internalizes the sensor output’s window comparator often required on automotive boards aiming to protect the power electronics from short circuits or overcurrents in general. The SOIC-8 package offers the same electrical performance, with the difference of being a fully-surface-mountable solution amended with additional package pins such as a VREF pin which enables either a non-ratiometric output mode or serves as an input pin defining the 0A level around which the sensor will build the output signal.
